The Federal Government announced this week that cigarattes are set for a hefty price rise with an increase in excise. It was reported that this hike in the tobacco tax could add $6.50 to the cost of a pack of 30 cigarettes in the May budget.
Dr Harry Hemley from the Victorina AMA stated that smoking was responsible for more than 4,000 deaths a year in Victoria. He also said that ” Most smokers know that giving it up is often the single best thing they can do to improve their health. Children and teenagers are particularly price sensitive so a steep increase in the cost of smokes should see less children and teenagers taking up this distructive habit”. That remains to be seen but there continues to be a lot of debate surrounding the Governments National Preventative Health Taskforce proposal.
There is no doubt that this debate has triggered many smokers to think again about why they smoke and the calls to my clinic this week are evidence that it has prompted some smokers to take action.
There are many different products on the market to help people give up smoking with varying results. And where one smoker will fail using a particular product or technique another smoker will be successful. It is not a one size fits all. Often after only one or two session the cravings and the desire has gone.
